How to Install Roofing Shingles without a Roofer

You don't need to call a roofer if your are handy or have extra shingles from a previous job. You'll also need a flat pry-bar, a utility tool, and some replacement shingles.

Start by sliding a prybar beneath the damaged edge. This will expose the nails and break the sealant bond.

Damaged Shingles can be removed

Shingles should stay in place under normal wind, but high-speed winds may cause them damage or to blow off. When shingles have been damaged, it is necessary to replace them. Understanding how to properly replace roofing shingles will help you save money and time on repairs.

Before you begin to replace shingles, make sure the flashing around the vents, chimneys, and any other area is in good shape. You will need to replace or remove the flashing before proceeding with the remainder of the project.

Then, slide a flat prybar under the edge of the shingle to identify it. It may be that shingles are being held in place by shingle sealing agent, which you can remove with the flat edge of a pry bar. Lift the shingle up and remove any nails that are holding it in place. Repeat the same process on shingles above and beneath the damaged shingle.

Remove the nails

You will need to lay down large tarps in order to catch the thousands nails that fall from your roof. You must be careful as protruding roofing nails can damage the new shingles.

You can use a flat prybar if you have the shingle out. This step can be more difficult than you think. Each shingle has four nails. The shingle nails penetrate both the nailing strips and into the top edge shingle.

Remove the shingle once you've removed all the nails. Replace this shingle now with a replacement that is the right size. Assure that the shingle you are replacing is the exact same size as any existing shingles around it.

Install the New Shingles

If you’re lucky, the previous owner may have left some shingles. If not, buy a bundle from a home centre or lumberyard in the same size and color as the shingles.

Before placing each shingle, apply asphalt roofing cement to its back. This will form a bond and hold the shingles in place.

You can then continue to lay shingles along the roof. Use the right technique and nail the shingles into place so that they are all within 1 inch of each other. This will keep water from collecting on the roof, causing damage to shingles below.

Install flashings to cover any vents or pipes which protrude out through the roof. Rubber boots are also recommended to protect the shingles from walls, chimneys and any other protrusions.

Clean Up

The curb appeal of your house is greatly affected by the appearance of your roofing. A patchy, mismatched roof can be a detriment to the appearance of your home. It may also decrease its value or cause issues like water staining in your ceilings.

Replace shingles with shingles that match the same shade and texture as the original shingles. Also, replace any step and valley flashings that are needed. You should remove and flatten all nails. Protruding nail can tear the new shingle, causing leaks.

If you're already on your roof, you should grab any loose tiles. This will increase the lifespan of your shingles. During the roof inspection you should also be on the lookout for weathered or curled shingles. Doing this regularly will ensure that your shingles last as long as possible.
